Adopted Horses

Our horses have gone on to do wonderful things!

Most recent adoptions and updates:

War was adopted by Linda:

Hi Bev- I thought I would give you a quick update on how War is doing. It's been a little over a month since we brought him home with us and he has really settled in nicely. I think he has adjusted to our routine/schedule and seems to anticipate when we will be coming to feed him. He always seems to know what time it is and is usually waiting at the gate or comes running when he sees me! Kind of cute! Yesterday I had my friend, Rebecca, come over. She is a very experienced horse person and has a degree in equine care/health. She spent several hours here and showed me a whole lot of things about caring for a horse. She also gave me some riding instruction and helped me with the tack. I think for the immediate future, she will giving me my riding instruction. She really liked War very much and thinks he has an amazing temperament. She thought he would make a wonderful show horse, but my riding would have to improve a whole lot before I could think about that!!!! LOL

I am attaching a couple of photos of me and War taken yesterday during my riding session. Feel free to post them on the website if you like. I am enjoying War so much and feel so lucky that we found each other. He is a joy to be around and look forward to seeing him every morning.

Have a wonderful holiday season! - Linda and War Action

Update on Alex the Barber and Hannah:

Hi, Bev! I confess to being a horrible communicator regarding Alex's progress, but he's been keeping us busy! He and Hannah had their first official dressage show last weekend, and came away with a score of 74---the high score of the day. Hannah was so proud! He's just coming along beautifully and using his back correctly and swinging through in the most lovely manner. We've had him hunter pacing and going to fun shows to garner some experience, and now he practically yawns when he arrives somewhere because everything is so "been there, done that." His jumping is also coming right along, and we expect him to go beginner novice next summer. We think we'll start at elementary in the spring just to build his confidence, but I don't think he'll stay there long.

So, thanks again for saving this amazing horse. Everyone is just so impressed by him, but more importantly, Hannah just loves riding him. They are a perfect match---you did a great job with putting them together.

Tracy

Chase was adopted by Sally in the fall of 2010- Update: Chase has put it all together, even the jumping!

magic was adopted by Hannah and family from DC as her first horse. She plans to show him in the future!

Update: Hey Bev! Finn is doing so so well. My trainer loves him and so do I. He learns very quickly and you can see when he is working things out and trying to understand. I love tbs! They have such a wonderful work ethic. I rode him for the third time today and he was wonderful. The first time I rode him in the indoor, he was a little up, but today was his second time being ridden in there and he was wonderful. In between those two rides, I rode him in the round pen once (it's a big round pen) and he was good in there too. He is already progressing really fast, just over three rides. Right now we are just walking and trotting him, working on his rhythm and balance on both the lunge line with/and without side reins and in the saddle. He is very responsive to my aids, especially my seat, which is actually helping me to refine my riding too. We also successfully introduced him to cross-ties with no fireworks (I'm not sure they were a totally new experience to him) and I've also done some ground work. He is enjoying being turned out all the time, but the barn we are at is great because they offered to bring him into an extra stall for the night during the hurricane. I attached some more photos and I'll keep you updated! Hannah

JR was adopted by Cayla of PA as an event horse. This young gal has high hopes for him! Together, they will shine! Update from mom Sharon: Cayla is so excited to be riding JR and I think she'll probably just stick with his name. He is quite the guy. Loves to be loved. She is excited every day to get to the barn ( I think Kate should just rent her a stall to sleep in.) She rode in the rain yesterday. She's NUTS. Hope all is well at the rescue. We couldn't have asked for a better experience. Thank you, Sharon

Caleb was adopted by Francie of VA as an event/hunt horse. He joins MAHR grads

DQ, Louis Que, Fine Fellow (William) and Bay Rocket!

Update: Hi Bev- just wanted to give you an update on Caleb. He has adapted well and fits in with the rest of the boys, The stable is being power washed and painted so you can imagine the chaos--not at all bothered by any of it he just walked around as if it were an everyday occurrence--What a good boy and a wonderful personality for such a young boy. He is just so sweet and sensible. Can not believe how very lucky I have been to get such wonderful hoses . Believe me I spread the word every chance I get-once again thanks. Francie

Forrest was adopted by Holly of PA as an endurance horse (although we think she will give eventing a try LOL)

Jake was adopted by Jennifer of MD as an all around horse!

Minny and Smarty were adopted by the Hadleys in VT as pleasure horses!

Cat was adopted by Margot in NJ: Update: He has settled right in and seems to be enjoying his new life as "King and Pleasure Horse." He doesn't seem to mind being an "only" child. More rescues should consider adopting suitable horses out to single horse homes. Update #2: I made a little trail in my woods to get Cat used to seeing other things. At first he wouldn't go over the LITTLE ditch (with his legs just about anything is little) but after me showing him how it's done he plodded right over it. Today the big news! I crossed the street and rode him in the ten acres offered to me by a neighbor. I had walked it myself yesterday - it runs along the backyards of several houses. So, there were all sorts of scary things - netting, kids playhouses, garden sheds, POOLS!, all sorts of other stuff. I walked him in hand the first pass around this morning. He was dancing around looking at everything. Then I hoisted myself up and away we went. By about the third pass around the field he was totally unconcerned. Of course I was lucky - no lawn mowers started up, no chain saws started up, no kids jumping in the pool. A dog did come out, but I don't think Cat saw him. Cat was very good. I think he has the makings of a dependable trail horse. All we did was walk, but that was ok with me.  When Cat hears me undo the chain on the gate to his field he comes RUNNING!!! And I don't even feed him everytime so I guess he is just coming to be sociable (or hopeful). Anyway, he still seems quite happy. Update #3: The Big Horse is doing fine. I think he thinks he is a lap dog. All he has to do is hear me lift the chain on the gate and he is on his way back to the barn. Speaking of which, I think he would be happy spending 24 hours a day in his stall (which he can go in and out of). One morning I actually had to wake him up to eat, as he was flat out.   Margot

Tougher was adopted by Bonnie of MD as an event horse~

Update#1: Hi Beverly,

I just wanted to let you know that Tougher is doing great. We found out by accident that he cross-ties like a champ. The owner of the barn forgot that I had told her that he didn't know how to cross-tie and she stuck him on the cross-ties for the farrier. He just stood there like a gentleman. He is such a good boy. I've been riding him regularly in the indoor arena and will probably venture outside later this week. He has been very well behaved and is relaxing more and more every day. Yesterday I caught him with his eyes half-way shut and his lower lip hanging while he was on the cross ties. :) He is now turned out with a buddy all day. He gets brought into his stall twice a day for feeding. He still weaves like a crazy when he's done eating, but all in all he is settling in quite well and seems very happy.

Update #2-Tougher is still doing wonderfully. We went on our first trail ride and he was great. We did the whole ride on a loose rein. He was happy to follow or to lead and was just as good on the trails as he was in open fields. I haven't ridden much in the last week because I "tweaked" my back, so I don't have any under saddle pictures. I should be back in the saddle in a day or two. He has been weaving less and less as he has gotten used to the barn schedule and going in his stall twice a day for feeding. :) Bonnie

Devil was adopted by Ashley- her first horse!

Trippi was adopted by the Rebecca and Michaela, two sisters from PA- he is their first horse!

Precious was adopted by Lynn of MD- she joins Henna, another MAHR grad, as a dressage horse. Update: Hi Bev: Sierra has been with me for 2-1/2 months, and I'm so very happy to have her. She is amazingly smart. She loves to work -- has a good work ethic -- loves learning new things -- always tries to do her best -- a true gem. She still has some issues when something upsets her. Mostly when people come into the barn, and she seems unsure as to what is going to happen next? But, in time, that behavior will disappear. I've turned her out with Henna, and they are a great match. Both are kind and gentle, and very considerate towards each other. No squealing or "boss mare" issues. I'm reading "Beyond the Track" by Anna Morgan Ford, and it gives some very good advice. (BEV's note: GREAT BOOK!) It has made me more aware of equine behavior, what to expect, how to handle different situations, mostly with patience and understanding. I'm so much enjoying this wonderful little filly, and thank you for finding her and bringing her into my life. Lynn

Dolly was adopted by Alexine of PA as an all around horse.

UDPATE: Hello Bev --It's been a month now since Annie came to live with me and I just wanted to drop you a line to say that she's doing great! We've been going on lots of little confidence-building trail rides and she's gamely tried everything I've asked her to do.

So far, we've also worked on hanging out in our stall (which she likes SO MUCH MORE now that she has a hanging Uncle Jimmy treat to entertain her) and not getting agitated when other horses come and go. She's also learning to stand without being cross-tied - quite a feat for a horse who was so anxious she needed a chain over her nose! Mostly, however, we just amble around, taking in this new world.

Everyone agrees that she's incredibly sweet; my mom visited and stood stroking her nose for half an hour. Annie just drooped her head against my mom's chest and soaked it all in. Since making such a good impression, she's been getting lots of treats in the mail (including Belgian sugar cubes in some fancy wooden box).

I never thought I could love another horse after losing my Rosie, but Annie makes my heart burst with gratitude.

Thank you again for the work you do for horses like Annie.

Alexine

Norton was adopted by Gigi as a fox hunter. Update: Hi, Bev

All is going very well!
I haven't settled on a name yet and I'm not going to use the name he came with :-) but........once I got moving down the road he traveled very well and he unloaded here at my house like a true gentleman. I had all the horses in the barn and expected a lot of "talking" but bringing him inside the barn was rather uneventful. So everyone stayed in their stalls for the afternoon while I went to the grocery store - there was absolutely nothing left in the house to eat! While I went shopping my husband was mowing the pasture I planned to use and checking the fencing. So when I returned and it was time to turn out, my plan was to put only one other horse out with him - the younger of my two paint horses who also happens to be 5 years old. This horse is totally non-aggressive and I felt he would be the kindest one to turn the new one out with and they did indeed become instant fast friends. It was so cute to watch the two of them eating with their muzzles practically touching one another.

Saturday he received his first training lesson from Tim. Tim really had him moving beautifully! He was obviously tired by the end of the lesson and today he got a day off as I went to Devon to see the carriages. Tim will be back tomorrow for lesson #2!

Update #2: Norton now has a new name - J.D. (for John Deere). I've been riding him religiously - well almost, I did miss a few days between the oppressive heat and the arrival of my second litter of TWO! But otherwise I have been doing my "homework" in the ring and have taken him out around the property for baby solo x-country rides.

He has settled in quite nicely to a routine and some of the little quirky things he did initially have almost completely gone away. So things are good! Thanks, Gigi

Chief was adopted by Shellie of WI as an event horse.

UPDATE: Chief is absolutely wonderful! He's settled in and I rode him for the first time on Friday. What a beautiful mover he is; Emily thinks he's going to be a great jumper. He responds very well to my aids and canters like a dream. He has a very sweet personality; he was playing in his water bucket the other day and loves a good head scratch. He's a perfect match and I'm excited to have him!
We'll be doing clinics and hopefully shows this summer and I'll be sure to keep you posted on his progress.

Bucky was adopted by Kathie of VA as a dressage/pleasure horse. Update:

Without gushing too much...may I just say how much I love Creek! (aka Buckmountaincreek). He was a superstar on a trail ride the other night...we had a squirrel jump on a fence in front of us...a helicopter fly overhead...a rickety trailer pass by...a dog run out from under the bushes...and Creek didn't bat an eye, just walked along, curious about the world around him! My past horses would have done an immediate tail spin and headed for home! Thanks again Bev for such a wonderful horse!

True was adopted by Dave and Chris (proud adopters of Rocky) as a pleasure horse!

Rocky was adopted by Dave of PA, a former Philadelphia Mounted Police Officer. Dave and Rocky hit it off instantly -Jean, Jan, and Kim, his guardian angels who knew him from years past came for the send off with a big basket of goodies including old race tapes and pictures~ Things are going great so far:

I love this horse! I can't tell you how trustful he is of me already! All I have to do when he's afraid of something, is stand near it and leave him at the end of his lead. He shy's away, but then comes closer and closer until he overcomes and conquers and then comes to me. He did it again today, by crossing a small wooden bridge over a stream on the property. The other day it was a stacked wood pile. He's amazing. I haven't been up yet. I feel it's more important to acclimate him to his new surroundings and friends. He's very good with other horses, and loves little treats. I was with him every day since coming home, and he's doing a fine job of fitting in. He actually bury's his head under my arm, and if I put my fingers on his brow, he moves his head up and down to assist in a good scratching. Many people commented what a nice horse he is for wanting that type of human contact. I never saw a horse like him, and may never again. We didn't take any photos yet, but will soon.... Rocky Blue and I send our best to all. We'll be back in touch!

And a few days later: I want to tell you that Rocky is the nicest horse I ever rode. He's totally trainable! I never saw anything like him. I understand now why he had such a great send off--- Dave

He is doing fantastic! He is always willing to learn and try new things, He has quieted down a lot and is much calmer and a quick learner. He improves with each ride. We are now starting to work on getting him to use his back to build up some muscle. I also lounge him to help with that. We also bought him a neon orange blanket and he for sure stands out! I recently just bought him a neon orange halter to match!

Just wanted to also thank you for such an awesome horse and I can't wait for our upcoming challenges. I appreciate all you have done for so many horses and people. Your work is truly amazing!!
