Dixie was one of those very special horses - when we saw him at the sale, we realized that his ankle was probably bad enough that he would not be sound for riding. As he was tied up to the metal hay rack and we were down around his legs, he was nuzzling the backs of our necks. As we sadly patted him and walked away, he turned his head and watched us as we walked all the way down the aisle and out of the sale barn. He kept haunting us and on Tuesday morning we called the sale and found out he had gone to slaughter, just as we figured. By noon, we called the kill buyer in NY and asked to buy him. He agreed not to send him to Canada the next morning. Suzanne got in her trailer and went and got him. We paid for him the following week at New Holland.

Dixie has been at Suzanne's recovering. He is the kindest sweetest horse ever. He is pasture sound as he ambles around, but xrays reveal severe arthritis so he will be very limited in any under saddle work. 
He is quite intelligent and friendly and always has a little nicker, even after all people have done to him for the sake of winning races.

Update November 2007:

Dixie Rap was adopted by Martha in NC. She was looking for a companion for Woody, her older QH, and fell in love with Dixie's picture. After several calls and emails back and forth to Suzanne in NY who was caring for Dixie, she decided to adopt him. He arrived a few days ago and has already become best buds with Woody. Thank you to Suzanne for making this all possible- you gave him the best care around- and thank you to Martha for taking on such a special boy!
