Suave Devil, b. g., 16.1+h, 1999.

Devil ran hard his whole life- He raced 6 years for at least 7 different owners, and compiled a record of 86 starts, 15 wins, 8 seconds, and 16 thirds-- in the top three for half of his starts- earning $279K- mostly in claiming races.

He ran against other MAHR horses, including Lion Around and Afternoon Clinic. At the end of his career he ended up in the parking lot at the New Holland auction, on a trailer awaiting his fate. Fortunately, the driver of the trailer found us and asked if we could take him- otherwise his future was looking bleak. Although we did not have any room, we went out to the trailer and found a handsome, kind, trusting stallion calmly waiting to see what people would want him to do next. 

We just couldn't leave him there, even though his ankles definitely showed the signs of a long hard racing career, so brought him home to MAHR to begin his assessment. We had him gelded--even though he was quieter and easier than many geldings and mares we have brought in.  We are now assessing him to determine what type of home would best suit him. In the meantime, we wanted to share his picture with you- he is personable, agreeable, and very very noble..........

Update: Had the vet out for Devil and xrays show a bunch of problems with his RF ankle- he has erosion of the cartilage (too many joint injections), a condylar lesion, and sesamoiditis (probably injured his XYZ ligament at some point.) He is suitable for occasional light trail rides only. He is sound enough living out 24/7 and happy and well. Devil is a very special boy, personable and level headed. Adoption fee $1- with a signed contract stating that he may never be sold but must come back to MAHR if the adopter can no longer keep him.

Update January 2007:

Suave Devil was adopted. Cris and her family adopted King Adam from us about a year ago. They were thinking about getting a companion/ husband horse and fell in love with Devil's picture (join the club!  this boy really has a huge fan base!) They took him home this week and report he arrived and settled right away and loves attention and treats from the kids. Thank you for giving this deserving guy a great home!!!
